For the profession

Firms, chambers and positions

A firm or chambers listing shows the practice's details and the lawyers who practise there. The firm proposes each position and the lawyer confirms it, so a roster only lists people who have agreed to be on it.

The short version

Firm details are public

A firm's address, website and contact details are business details shown on its page.

Lawyers confirm their positions

A proposed position appears only after the lawyer, or their delegate, accepts it.

Roles stay private

Who manages your firm's listing on The Roll is never shown publicly.

Your listing

What a firm or chambers page shows

Manage the listing from My firms in your account menu.

Practice details

The name, whether it's a firm or chambers, the district and city, a description, the address and map, the website and contact details, and an optional registration number.

The roster

Lawyers with a current, confirmed position, grouped by position. A lawyer appears only while their own profile is approved.

Supervision

Owners and admins can link a junior to the seniors supervising them. The roster shows these links while both positions are current.

Review

Like lawyer profiles, a new firm listing and later edits to it are reviewed by our team before they are published.

Members

Three roles for the people who manage it.

Members manage the listing on The Roll. Membership is private and doesn't create a lawyer profile or a position. A firm always keeps at least one owner.

Owner

Everything, including ownership

Owners can do everything admins can, and add or remove other owners. The account that registered the firm is its first owner.

Admin

People and positions

Admins edit the listing, add and remove editors and admins, propose and end positions, and manage supervision.

Editor

The listing only

Editors keep the firm's details up to date. They can't manage members or positions.

Positions

Proposing and confirming positions

Positions are partner, senior associate, associate, junior, consultant or of counsel, with an optional display title, a start date and, once it ends, an end date.

The firm proposes

An owner or admin proposes a position for a lawyer. Proposing gives the firm no access to that lawyer's profile.

The lawyer decides

The lawyer or their delegate confirms or declines it on the Background tab of their profile editor. Until then the position isn't public.

Changes need fresh consent

Changing the position or its dates, including ending it, returns it to the lawyer to confirm. Changing only the display title doesn't.

Past positions

Once a confirmed position ends, it leaves the roster and stays in the lawyer's professional experience, labelled Firm-confirmed.

Common questions

Questions people ask

Can a firm add a lawyer to its roster without their agreement?

No. A firm proposes a position and it appears only after the lawyer, or someone they have authorised, confirms it. If a lawyer hasn't claimed their profile yet, our team may decide on their behalf.

Can a lawyer practise at more than one firm?

Yes. A lawyer can hold positions at several firms or chambers, but not overlapping positions at the same one.

Does joining a firm on The Roll create a lawyer profile?

No. Membership only lets an account manage the firm's listing. Lawyers have their own profiles, and a firm owner who is an Attorney-at-Law can create one when registering.

Does Firm-confirmed mean The Roll has checked the position?

No. It means the firm proposed the position and the lawyer accepted it. The Roll hasn't independently checked it.
