Finding a lawyer

Searching the directory

The Roll lists Attorneys-at-Law, law firms and chambers across all nine provinces of Sri Lanka. Searching is free and you don't need an account. This guide explains each way to search and what the results include.

The short version

Free and open

Anyone can search The Roll without signing up, and lawyers are listed for free.

Combine filters

Narrow by district, practice area, service and the languages a lawyer works in, with or without a name.

Read the profile

Results are a starting point. Profiles say who provided each detail and when it was last confirmed.

The lawyer directory

Five ways to narrow a search.

Start at Find a lawyer and combine as many filters as you need. Every filter you add narrows the results, and the address bar keeps your search so you can bookmark or share it.

Results show 100 listings a page. Only listings our team has approved appear.

Name

Search by the lawyer's name

Type all or part of a name. The search looks at names only, not biographies or practice descriptions, so use the other filters to search by subject.

District

Where the lawyer practises

Choose one of Sri Lanka's 25 districts. A lawyer with several offices is placed in the district of their primary office.

Practice area

The broad area of law

Family law, land and property, employment and more. Lawyers choose their own areas; an area on a profile is not a certification of expertise.

Service

A specific task

Such as drafting a will or reviewing an employment contract. Services are grouped by practice area and come from a list our team maintains, so names stay plain and factual.

Languages

Sinhala, Tamil or English

Filter separately by the language of spoken consultations and the language of document work. Choosing both finds lawyers who offer each.

Other ways in

Browse by firm, place or area of law

If you don't have a name in mind, these pages are a good place to start.

Firms & chambers

Search law firms and chambers by name, district and practice area. A firm's page lists its contact details and the lawyers currently practising there, grouped by position.

Locations

Browse by province and district. Each district page shows lawyers listed there and links to the full directory search for that district.

Practice areas

Read what each area of law usually covers, see the services within it, and find recent Journal guides on the subject.

The Journal

Plain-language guides and FAQs about legal processes in Sri Lanka, many written by lawyers listed on The Roll. Useful for knowing what to ask before you get in touch.

Before you choose

What the results do and don't tell you

Results show

Approved, public listings

  • Lawyers, firms and chambers whose listing our team has reviewed and approved.
  • The details each lawyer has chosen to publish.
  • Every listing that matches your filters. Nobody pays to appear higher.

Results don't show

A recommendation

  • A listing is not an endorsement, and approval is not a check of credentials.
  • A practice area or service is the lawyer's own description of their work.
  • The Roll does not give legal advice or match you with a lawyer.

Common questions

Questions people ask

Does it cost anything to search The Roll?

No. Searching is free and you don't need an account. Lawyers, firms and chambers are also listed free of charge.

Why can't I find a lawyer I know?

Not every Attorney-at-Law is listed yet, and new or recently edited listings are hidden until our team has reviewed them. Try fewer filters, or part of the name. If the lawyer should be listed, they can add their practice for free.

How are search results ordered?

Alphabetically by name. Results are not ranked by payment or by anything The Roll has checked: every approved listing that matches your filters is included, 100 to a page.

Is The Roll the official roll of Attorneys-at-Law?

No. The Roll is an independent directory. It is not affiliated with the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka or the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
